Photodynamic therapy - PACT - for nail fungus
Using light, safely and gently
Fungal infection of nails is much more common than we care to think. The infection often causes unsightly and unattractive nails and can sometimes be very painful, not only when playing sport but also in general day-by-day activity. Until recently, the most effective way of tackling fungal nail infections was to take oral anti-fungal medications, which are often not an option for many people because of their uncomfortable side effects and potential interactions with other medications.
PACT is an abbreviation and a scientific term that stands for Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy. With this method, fungus can be killed effectively on both toenails and fingernails. The treatment can be used on any patients, including children and diabetics, is non invasive and pain free. There is no downtime and normal activities can be resumed immediately after the treatment.
PACT uses a combination of a photodynamic gel and an LED light to stop the infection spreading. Unlike to human cells, fungal cells possess a cell wall. This cell wall can be stained with a dye that is harmless to human cells but stain the fungal cell selectively, making them sensitive to a specific wavelength of light. By conducting the light treatment with a PACT high-power LED lamp the stained cell wall of the fungus is attacked and destroyed. The fungus can no longer continue to grow. Repeating the treatment ensures that the fungus is destroyed even if infection is severe and penetrates deeply within the nail, without causing damage to your healthy cells.
We have a dedicated PACT clinic to ensure that you can receive the treatment protocol. The first 3 treatments need to be completed within a 10 - 12 day period, followed by another treatment one month later & then another treatment one month hence. The length of appointment can vary depending on how many nails are to be treated, but start at 30 minutes to treat one nail. The clinical results have been very positive, in the 85% + region for destroying nail fungus. This is a higher percentage than any other treatment currently available. Results can be seen a few months after treatment, as we need to wait for the healthy nail to grow through. PACT treatment is pain free, and you can continue with day to day living immediately following treatment.
